Like the interconnectedness of our ecosystem, every member of family-run Anna's Organic Farm plays an important role in supporting their business. Anna, the owner, facilitates the operation as a whole, her father Manuel manages farming and operations, her mother Evangelina supports with quality control, and her brother Luis, currently studying engineering and agriculture, handles sales and technology. While they each lead a specific area of the farm, they come together to pack and sell their produce as well as complete larger projects.

The idea for the business initially sprouted from Manuel, who had grown up in agriculture in Mexico and has been farming organically for 12 years. Their family knew that starting and maintaining a business would be difficult, being the first members of their community to do so and facing language barriers and land access challenges. However, through their diligence and collaboration with one another, they have grown their operation from five acres to over 60 in the past four years.

Advising Snapshot: 2022

While in the past, Anna’s Organics has focused on wholesale relationships, these regulatory and market systems can be onerous for small, BIPOC-led farms like them. Thus, alongside KTA farm business advisor Angie Estrada-Bugarín, Anna’s Organics has been working to diversify their market channels specifically through direct-to-consumer streams.

This year, Anna’s began cultivating a new relationship with Earl’s Organic. As a values-aligned grower for the distributor, the opportunity has allowed the farm further control over the type and quality of the produce they grow. Anna’s is also a participant in the farmers market incubator, a program that aims to open opportunities for small, BIPOC-owned farms to explore participation across previously inaccessible farmers markets in the Bay Area. Together with a group of other KTA client farms, Anna’s Organics will rotate through the Hayward, Clement St., and Grand Lake (Oakland) markets over the next year, nurturing new customer relationships within different communities while providing a broader selection of healthy, culturally relevant food to consumers.
