Ways to Show Up for Local Food During COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted our local and global ecosystem, and impacted our community of farmers & ranchers, families, chefs, and nonprofit partners, disproportionately affecting individuals that have historically faced oppression and injustice, including folks fighting for ecological responsibility, working class families, women farmers, queer farmers, and farmers of color. We are operating in a new, and challenging reality.
During this time, we are grateful for all our clients are doing to ensure our communities are still nourished, and for the wisdom of leaders in our community who have much to teach us around remaining resilient, collaborative and caring for ourselves and each other in the face of hardship.
We have long believed that we can only achieve our vision for a vibrant, community-based food system as a collective. We are grateful that amidst these trying times we can count you as part of that community. Wishing good health and joy to you and your loved ones.
Please note that we will continue to update this page regularly as we hear from our clients and come across resources from partners. If you have anything to add, feel free to email us or engage with us on social media through Facebook or Instagram.

HOW TO SUPPORT KTA FARMERS AND RANCHERS
There are a number of ways to both support our farmers and ranchers, and strengthen our regional food system during this pandemic. Purchase CSA shares, visit farmers markets, purchase gift certificates, and order for home delivery or local pick-up, if offered. Additionally, receiving updates from farms is important to anticipating closures and changes in offerings. We encourage you to follow our farms and ranches on social media as well as sign up for their newsletters in order to stay in touch. If you have the opportunity to drop your farmer a note or chat with them in-person, ask how they’re doing and share what their contribution means to you, especially during these times.
*While farmers markets are considered “essential businesses” during the shelter-in-place order, we advise confirming a market’s open hours and location before visiting. KTA farmers and ranchers’ social media are good sources for this information.

HOW TO SUPPORT RESTAURANTS, FOOD HUBS, AND OTHER COMMUNITY FOOD OUTLETS
Equally vital to our regional food system are the restaurants, food hubs, and other local outlets that deliver and prepare what we eat. Even with limited operations or closures, there are still actions we can take to ensure they remain in our communities once this pandemic subsides.
Purchase gift certificates or Credibles (prepaid edible credits that function similar to a gift card)
Buy in bulk and freeze food
Find restaurants that are offering take-out or pick-up options:
Eater SF has developed a list of such restaurants that include KTA friends like Nopa/Nopalito, Delfina, Besharam and Outerlands, so has the Chronicle
If you’re in the Sacramento area, Visit Sacramento has created a list of restaurants with to-go options
Donate to a Go Fund Me for Bini’s Kitchen, Nyum Bai, Outerlands, and Namu Restaurant Group (all four businesses are Grazing at the Kitchen Table partners, and Bini’s and Nyum Bai are La Cocina entrepreneurs)
Financial assistance and relief resources for restaurant workers
Donate to Sonoma Family Meal, which is providing meals to the community by sourcing from regional farms and paying local chefs and restaurants to prepare food. You can also donate to the Single Thread Relief Fund, which is one of the restaurants cooking for Sonoma County residents in need.
Support the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center by purchasing their Acorn Bites
Contribute to the following funds:
La Cocina Emergency Relief Fund (provides emergency relief assistance to active participants of La Cocina)
Restaurant Opportunities Centers United Disaster Relief Fund
Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation COVID-19 Crisis Relief Fund
ONE FAIR WAGE Emergency Coronavirus Tipped and Service Worker Support Fund

HOW TO CARE FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR COMMUNITY
This pandemic takes an emotional, mental, social and economic toll on each of us, but none more than those in vulnerable communities. Starting with maintaining our own self-resilience allows us to show up in allyship with others who are even more deeply affected.

Farming Hope has temporarily shut down their job training restaurant, but has kitchens, employees ready to cook, and plenty of energy to share. They are looking for San Francisco organizations that need contracted meal prep. If your organization is looking for contracted meals or if you know of other organizations looking for help, please contact Jamie at jamie@farminghope.org.
Support donations of fresh fruit to healthcare & hospital workers, essential emergency workers and food banks through The FruitGuys’ Fruit for Heroes campaign. In addition, The FruitGuys is offering discounts on home delivery, delivery to remote staff, and office delivery for essential workers.
Contribute to the following funds:

UndocuFund (disaster relief support for undocumented families and individuals in the identified geographies)
Modest Needs (provides grants to hourly workers who are furloughed or facing financial burdens while still working)
HOW TO SUPPORT NONPROFITS
Many nonprofits are rushing to respond to the needs of their communities while struggling with the pandemic’s impact on their own operations. Flexible and essential funding, suspended reporting requirements, and supportive outreach are just a few of the crucial elements necessary to sustain our nonprofits.
Donate to nonprofits that are working towards building resilient regional food economies; advocating for thriving livelihoods for a multi-racial next generation of sustainable and regenerative farmers, ranchers, and farmworkers; and uplifting the ecological responsibility and land stewardship of women farmers, queer farmers, and farmers of color. Among the organizations KTA is aligned with are Minnow, ALBA, HEAL Food Alliance, First Nations Development Institute Native Agriculture and Food Systems Initiative, Urban Tilth and Mandela Partners.
Contribute to the Latino Community Foundation Love Not Fear Fund which supports Latino-led organizations that provide wrap around and emergency services to the most vulnerable communities. In addition to donating, check out LCF’s list for additional ways to support nonprofits.
Use the time at home to advocate for change alongside nonprofits. Highlight urgent needs around improving the public health system, taking critical action on climate change or protecting undocumented families. Write emails and letters to local, state and federal officials. Direct messages to the President, the Governor, your representatives in the House of Representatives and the Senate, State Legislature and local chambers (county and city).
